'The audience went insane - I can't remember the last time I was at a concert and the crowd screamed that loud. Elliott took a moment to bask in the glory and dove right into the lyrics of his opening number. His voice live hits you like a sucker punch and I was nearly taken aback. I had been told by so many of y'all what a difference his voice was live, and you weren't kidding. As his singing soars up and out, you soar right along with him. It was pitch-perfect and

Elliott is planning another tour soon, recording a Christmas album, doing an international USO tour later in the year, and looking ahead to the next album. Q. How would you describe the sound and feel for "Elliot Yamin," your debut album?
A. I would describe it as being real soulful. It's got a very mature, sophisticated sound to it, it's kind of an artist's album, if you will. One of the great things about the deal that I got was that we did an independent partnership with Sony/ATV; my publishing company. The deal we did, and the way we did it, was unique and innovative in a way. That being said, I had a lot of creative freedom which is something you always hear an artist talk about. Coming out the gate I thought it was really important to be me and make the kind of music that I like. Write and co-write that songs I liked and wanted to do, I think it's important to stay true to yourself and not have to compromise your style or who you are as an artist and I don't think we did that with this album. It's all me, who I am, it's very genuine and not too overproduced and it's a great vibe.

Q. Where did you draw your inspirations from for the album?
A. Personal experiences and just being socially aware of what's going on. I think it's important to write from your heart, think of past experiences, to think of what you have been through personally. So, a lot of songs on the album are built around love and love songs, love this and love that. It's been great and I'm a very loving person and I've received a lot of love over the past year and so forth. I've got a lot of loving relationships with a lot of people; I think those are my main inspirations.
Q. How did "Wait For You" get chosen as the first single released?
A. There were various reasons, number one, I really liked the lyrics of the song and how I performed it. I didn't write the song, it was written by Taj Jackson, who is a writer for Stargate, they produced the track. I don't know if you know too much about Pop music and them; but they're all over the radio waves. They've got a bunch of hits under their belt; it's a combination of things. Obviously, your first single you want to be played on the radio but there aren't too many hotter producers on the radio than Stargate, so that was a perfect fit. Like I said, I really liked the way I performed the song and how heartfelt the performance was vocally and the lyrics were great too. It was also something different, just to give the audience something that is a different taste. We released this teaser, which is a song called "Movin' On," it's the first song on the album. It's got a Hip Hop, up-tempo beat to it. That was the teaser and I kind of wanted to give everyone a different taste to my sensitive side.

Q. When will listeners and fans get to see a live performance from you showcasing your new CD?
A. Yeah we do, we're going to do "Regis and Kelly" in New York the day of the release on March 20th and then we'll be doing "Jimmy Kimmel" on April 4th I think. I think more talk show dates are on the table right now. I think once the record comes out and once the single gets added to more radio stations we'll be getting more offers and those things on the table will become complete. I am doing a thing for Clear Channel like KISS in LA and Z100 in New York, they're doing this big promo thing in Bahamas the week of my release. They'll be a few artists down there, like JoJo and Akon, performing for contest winners. We'll be doing the acoustic thing down there the week of the release and doing a whole bunch of radio and satellite tours; we'll be all over the map.

Q. You mentioned that you didn't pen the song "Wait For You," but, how much hand in the production and writing on the CD did you have?
A. I was involved with it one hundred percent pretty much. I co-wrote all but four songs on the album and there are eleven songs total. As far as the songs I help put together the melodies and I definitely arranged the vocals. So, I was a big part of it and that's how it should be; that's how it should always be.

Q. What do you think it is about the music and songs on the album that will really resonate with listeners?
A. I think that the melodies and the lyrics are really intriguing, I know that sounds kind of broad, but I think people will really be drawn to the music. I think people will be drawn to the music and the vocals. There are some songs on there, the samples people are hearing, they are really touching people, they are really feeling the meanings of the songs. We're getting great responses from all the samples that we're putting out there

Q. Do you have a favorite track?
A. There are so many of them and the songs are so different. All of them have a different dynamic to them; it's hard to say which one I like the most. A lot of them are my favorites for different reasons. I really like "Take My Breath Away," I really love the lyrics in "One Word" and I love the song "Train Wreck." There is another song called "Find A Way," I love the lyrics in that. That song talks about things that are going on in the world today and what's going on socially. It's got really important lyrics and I think that people are really feeling that one and that one sounds really good live. We've included that particular song
Q. What would you like to say to your fans and supporters?
A. I just wanted to say I don't think there is a way to thank those people out there enough. I really get a true sense of family from my fans, everybody is in it together, that's how I approach this whole thing as a team project, we're all in it together. Let's just go out and do this and do this together. That's what I'm all about, when I talk about my album or the music, I always like to say we and what we're doing because it's a total team effort. We had so many great key players and everybody did what they do best individually and collectively. I like to take that approach with fans too, I owe them a serious debt of gratitude for their support and hanging in there with me. Everybody has been really patient because it's taken quite a while to build this album and come out with my own stuff. I think it's been well worth the wait and I appreciate all of their love and support. Let's do this together!'

'"It's an eclectic mix of just different sounds for every listener out there — for the ['Idol'] viewers, for the young cats, for everyone in between," Yamin said. "We worked with so many different ideas and sounds ... and it's not your typical-sounding album." .."Movin' On," which Yamin recorded before he hit the road on the American Idols Live Tour last summer..is about "trying to get this girl's attention and she's not giving you any rhythm, so you're just ready to move on," Yamin said. "It's got an uptempo, dance vibe to it."

Other tracks on the album include second single "Wait for You," the bluesy ballad "Take My Breath Away" written by John Mayer guitarist David Ryan Harris, and the socially conscious "Find a Way."

Yamin also covers Leon Russell's "A Song for You," which Yamin's idol, Donny Hathaway, recorded in 1971 and which brought Paula Abdul to tears when Yamin sang it on "Idol."

"I have a throwback voice," Yamin said. "People listen to my voice and tell that I'm really influenced by that era, by that genre of music. We did a good job of modernizing that to a certain extent on some songs, but I'm always going to stay true to my style and choice of music. I don't think we compromise that at all."

'For about three months this winter, Yamin hopscotched from L.A. to New York to Atlanta to work on the 11 songs (and others) that will be released March 20 under the straightforward title, "Elliott Yamin." It's an intriguing mixture of old school soul ("Movin' On"), radio-friendly smooth R&B (first single "Wait for You"), sensitive crooning ("One Word") and rousing gospel-flavored pop ("Free"). "The way this album is made is very organic. There's no glossiness to it, and that's something I'm really proud of," Yamin says. He worked with renowned producers such as Tony Reyes (Christina Aguilera, Ciara, Lionel Richie), the Norwegian team known as Stargate (Beyoncé, Ne-Yo, Rihanna) and Mike Mangini (Bruce Hornsby, Joss Stone, David Byrne) hefty names for a newcomer.. "These days, records don't sell like they used to, and I try to defer my mind away from, OK, how many records am I going to sell? That really isn't important to me. If people can just appreciate the stuff that I did, it'll come. And if it doesn't, it doesn't." As for that record deal, it's a unique situation that could prove financially tremendous for Yamin if the album succeeds.

He has a publishing deal with Sony/ATV, which means songwriting and licensing royalties because he wrote one song on his album and co-wrote four others. The album is being released on Hickory Records, an imprint that is owned by Sony, but, according to Yamin's manager, Jeff Rabhan, is a virtual label. Sony provided a marketing budget, and Rabhan's entertainment company, Three Ring Projects, was responsible for hiring publicists and scoring a distribution deal to get the music to the public.

"Hickory Records doesn't exist anywhere except in Elliott Yamin's world," said Rabhan, who, coincidentally, grew up in Richmond and worked with Clay Aiken and Kelly Clarkson during his time at major entertainment management company The Firm. "He is the launching artist for this imprint . . . but I have the utmost amount of faith. There are no guarantees in the record business, but we feel great because we're not relying on someone else to do something." Yamin is also a 50-50 partner in his record -- a solid deal in an industry where the artist usually sees about 12 percent to 15 percent of royalties. "Sony invested in me as a partner," Yamin says. "We both stand or fall." ..when he was recording the single, "Wait for You," in New York with Stargate, the producers called him out of the booth to listen to another song. "It turned out to be 'One Word,' and they wanted to know if I liked the song and wanted to cut it, too. I was blown away...I don't think Stargate knew who I was, which was great. I think I went in there and really showed them. They were probably thinking, here's another 'American Idol' reject trying to make it," he says with a laugh. Yamin hasn't returned to Richmond since his December appearance at a charity tennis expo, but will be home twice this month. On March 21, he'll fly in from New York for an in-store appearance at the Circuit City in Short Pump ("I've got to show the hometown some love," he says), then fly out to the Bahamas to perform for radio station contest winners from New York and Los Angeles. On March 31, he's back home for a charity event for Comfort Zone, an organization that supports grieving children.

In between are scheduled appearances on "Regis & Kelly," an appearance at the Virgin Megastore in Times Square and a possible visit to Ellen DeGeneres. He's also just taped an audio performance for www.napster.com and a video rehearsal jam for www.rehearsals.com, which should be up in a couple of weeks. Yamin will likely embark on a small tour this spring, and, depending on the album's reception, a larger trek in the summer. Right now, though, he's actually enjoying watching "American Idol" on TV when he has time. "It's pretty cool to see it on the air and be on the other side. When I watch it, I get so tickled. I watch it with an ear-to-ear grin," Yamin says, citing LaKisha Jones, Melinda Doolittle..as favorites. "It's a wonderful sense of pride sitting in front of the TV and feeling like I'm from this elite class, this alumni of talented singers that made it on this crazy journey."

Top40 Charts reports, 'March 20th marks the release of Elliott Yamin, the debut album from one of American Idol's most memorable contestants. Set for release on Hickory Records (a label affiliated with Sony ATV Music Publishing where Yamin is signed as a writer,) the CD boasts both a lion's share of songs co-written and performed by Yamin as well as participation from some of the entertainment industry's most respected songwriters and producers. Among the writers and producers who worked with Yamin in the creation of the CD are Stargate (Beyoncé, Ne-Yo, Rihanna), Josh Abraham (Pink, Linkin Park, 30 Seconds to Mars), DJ Lethal (Evanescence, Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit), Michael Mangini (Joss Stone, Baha Men, David Byrne), and Derek Bramble (David Bowie, Vanessa Williams, Lalah Hathaway).

Fans of Yamin's work on American Idol will be delighted to find his version of Leon Russell's "A Song for You," which Yamin's own idol, Donny Hathaway, recorded in 1971. Viewers will recall that Yamin's smoldering performance brought Paula Abdul to tears – she said he was an American idol – and moved Cowell to liken Yamin's rendition to a vocal master class, judging it "superb." Randy Jackson simply called the young man from Richmond, Va., "the bomb."
Also making an appearance on Elliott Yamin is "Movin' On," which the singer co-wrote and which is likely to remind American Idol devotees of the time Abdul called him "one funky white boy."

Yamin's whiskey-soaked tenor – an instrument he characterizes as "raw" and "gritty," more Wilson Pickett than Sam Cooke – unifies the disc's disparate flavors. The record is also commendable for capturing the immediacy of Yamin's live performances and his palpable joy in singing.
Commenting on the recording process, Yamin said: "Collaborating on the songs with these talented people who've been involved in music way longer than me and who share my passion for it has been an incredible experience. I've learned so much from them as an artist and as a person. The key to writing is to come from the heart. People relate to real feelings."

Perhaps even more compelling than Yamin's status as an out-of- nowhere vocal powerhouse – he came to American Idol with no vocal training and no real performance experience – is his role as the underdog, who as a child had to cope with near-deafness in his right ear and at 16 was faced with Type 1 diabetes.

Asked how he's coped with sudden fame, he points out: "A lot of young people with diabetes have said I've given them hope and made them believe in the power of music. They've told me how they've struggled and gone through difficult changes in their lives, and that seeing how I was able to achieve something through 'Idol' has inspired them to go for what they want. It's amazing to me that I've played that role in someone's life."
Yamin has truly 'given back" and has encouraged his fans to be involved in raising funds for the Richmond chapter of the ADA and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. "I've donated the clothes I've worn on 'Idol' and onstage during the tour and anything I've been widely photographed wearing. I've also donated American Idol memorabilia and autographs for fundraisers," he informs. "But I don't feel I've done enough yet – there's just so much more to do."

"When you look out into the audience and see people singing along and smiling and laughing and crying, you feel an incredible connection. The fact that you are able to move people that way is the most satisfying thing I've ever experienced. I thrive on it," Yamin says. "When I'm onstage, I'm home – I have a sense of belonging I've never felt before. It feels like what I was born to do. It has put my whole life into perspective. It's like I finally figured it out; I finally got it right: I'm a singer."

Sing Like Yamin It! As we anxiously await Elliott Yamin's debut CD on March 20 (available for pre-order at Amazon) and his new single, 'Movin' On' this week on iTunes, Obliquity writes, 'At last, the American Idol Season 5 album I’ve been waiting for. The above is a sneak-peak at the album cover for Elliott Yamin’s eponymous debut CD (released on Hickory/Sony/ATV). It’s scheduled to drop on March 20, 2007. The first single, “Movin’ On”, is set to hit radio and digital retail on February 13th–just in time for your favorite (soon-to-be-ex?) Valentine. Elliott Yamin has a 30-second clip of a new song floating around the Internet. It’s called “Movin’ On,” and I have to say, it sounds really excellent. Very neo-soul, like John Legend, whom I adore. I hope it sells well, but I think the most important thing is that Elliott has creative control and puts out the type of album he wants…and, of course, that his fans are pleased. When compared to the treacle of “Dream Myself Awake,” it’s enough to make this Taylor fan wish that Taylor hadn’t won, and had gotten the Hickory deal instead.'

American Idol finalist Elliott Yamin will release his debut album on March 20. The album will be released through RED Distribution. Yamin worked closely with his music publisher, Sony/ATV Music Publishing, on the writing and production of the album, and the two parties will similarly cooperate in the marketing of the project.

"This is an ideal situation that enables Elliott to have real creative and marketing input over the music that he produces," manager Jeff Rabhan said. The deal will also allow Yamin "to participate as a meaningful partner in the album's financial success," Rabhan said.

"I'm excited to get my music out to my fans, and I'm thrilled to be back in the studio working on original music," Yamin said.

"We are very happy to help Elliott achieve his vision and bring his music to his strong fan base,” said Danny Strick, President, Sony/ATV Music Publishing. “This project is a natural development of our role as a modern day publisher, helping our writers to reach the broadest audience."

Elliott Yamin’s first single “Movin On”, will be available on all digital service providers by February 13.

Yamin recently finished his nationwide American Idol tour, performing live in front of half a million fans. He’s planning a solo tour for spring/summer 2007.

He is represented by Three Ring Projects and Pulse Recording.

I've been writing and recording w/some of the most talented people on the planet and I can't wait to share it w/ya'll! ! Boy, am I one lucky guy!...I truly have the most supportive, articulate, intelligent fans in the entire world!....on a daily basis, I get countless emails from Yaminions and from E-Trainers alike...as well as fans from Thailand, UK, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and from all over our great country! Thank you to all you folks @the Yaminion site for starting up that website and providing a forum for not only fans of mine, but fans of life and music, to meet, discuss and share ideas and opinions every day since the show started!...your support has been the most inspiring tool for me to use when I put the pen to the pad and create! Yamin has signed with Hickory Records and also inked a deal with RED Distribution, which will help promote the album with Sony/ATV, with whom he has a publishing contract.' As I listen to Elliott Yamin's marvelous version of Donny Hathaway's 'This Christmas', I wanted to wish all the soul survivors a wonderful Christmas. I was shocked and saddened by the passing of the late, great Godfather of Soul, James Brown. What a loss. What an amazing, soulful performer. I remember seeing JB live many times..the first time was at a beautiful outdoor jazz festival one summer in Nice, France. James was jammin and rockin da house so hot it was standing room only..this was all outside, mind you..it was so packed and soulful and live we were standin on the elevated trunks of the olive trees to check out da Godfather doin his thang!..oh man, it was so damn fine! What a performance! JB was funkin! And the band was so tight! It was soo da bomb! And folks had climbed up into the high branches of the olive trees to get a better look..the Godfather was rockin it so hard all the trees on the hillside were shakin as everybody jammed and moved and dug the great JB..so truly awesome! Just a few years ago we drove up one glorious, beautiful perfect day to a sold out benefit to see James Brown at the Count Basie theatre..my man hadn't ever seen the Godfather, and I said, oh, man, we gotta go! It was a beautiful, beautiful thing. Today, Richmond.com recognized the best quotes of 2006..at the top of the list was Elliott Yamin: "Stay humbled, stay grounded. Just be yourself." Words to live by. Spoken by the soulful, humble and extraordinarily talented Elliott Yamin who won our hearts with his moving beautiful tribute to the late, great, remarkable Donny Hathaway. Elliott's wonderful mom, Claudette, also had a memorable quote recalling 'her son's most rebellious stunt as a teenager': "He wasn't a bad kid ever. Elliott dropped out of school in the 10th grade. I allowed him to drop out so I would not be arrested for allowing him to be truant. But the deal was, you drop out of school, you go work at McDonald's because that's the best place you'll ever work without an education. So he did. And one night, Elliott didn't come home, so I locked him out of the apartment. He actually slept on top of the washing machines."

We're carolin thru the nite! I've been enjoying Elliott Yamin's exquisite, extraordinary vocal on 'This Christmas', 'I Believe To My Soul', 'A Song For You' and 'Moody's Mood For Love'. Beautiful! I love it! So Soulful and Inspired. Elliott moves me like Donny Hathaway does. So few do. And a few folks are taking note of Elliott's remarkable talent and musical performance. Music at the Baldchemist writes, 'Well, a liitle be-lated but I have just been listening to arguably the finest modern singer for a long long time-The fabulous Elliot Yamin. Without any doubts, as far as I am concerned this wonderfully human interpreter of lyric and harmony will be the Tony Bennett of the future. Only Bennett and possibly Sinatra ever gave music so much passion and feel into their timing, and phrasing. No hystronics just gets up and moves his audience like no other. I'm guessing, but he seems to live and feel music. Putting all of his obvious love into it. Many thanks Elliot you have put back my faith into modern music interpretation. I have spent my whole life as a singer all over the World and have rarely heard such talent. Great phrasers are in short supply I spend hours listening to Tony Bennett Nina Simone, Streisand et al, believe me Elliot Yamin is well on the way to being amongst them as an icon to great music. As I enjoyed Elliott Yamin's soulful new classic single, 'This Christmas'.. Wonderful news greeted my eyes upon seeing today's Richmond Times- Dispatch.. Could Elliott Yamin have a recording deal on the horizon? What an exciting holiday, indeed! The article reads: 'Claudette Yamin.. brought autographed photographs of her son, Elliott Yamin of "American Idol" fame..Claudette Yamin..said her son planned to attend a White House holiday celebration this week before making an announcement about a recording deal next week.' OMG! I'm soo excited! Congratulations, Elliott! I can't wait to hear all the fantastic news! You made my day, week, month, year and holiday season! Go Elliott! We love you! 'Hey everybody! I'm so glad ya'll are feeling my version of "This Christmas"! As you know it is already streaming on AOL, and should be available for purchase on iTunes today! Just wanted to make sure my fans had a chance to vibe with it 1ST!...In case you haven't noticed, there is also a short video of the making of "This Christmas" in the studio on my profile page..The concoction of talent used to build this song was incredible! DJ Lethal...my man Ollie layed down the bass....one of the sickeest pianists I've seen-Eli...live horns and guitar...and to top it all off, we were blessed w/the live drum track from an old school legend by the name of James Gatson...He was Bill Withers' drummer back in the day!!(check out his live @carnigie hall album-just 1 of my personal favorites!)...I will also be featured in the latest issue of People Magazine, which I believe should be hitting the newstands today as well! Since his October concert at the State Fair of Virginia, Richmond's "American Idol," Elliott Yamin, has eluded the public for good reason -- he's been working. This week, Yamin unveils a cover of Donny Hathaway's smooth R&B nugget, "This Christmas," exclusively on AOL (http://music.aol.com/) and iTunes (www.itunes.com). The song was recorded at California's Pulse Recording in Silver Lake, just outside of Los Angeles, during Yamin's monthlong, cross-country hop from the West Coast to Nashville to Atlanta, where he has been meeting with songwriters and producers..last week Yamin inked a publishing contract with Sony/ATV..Yamin's manager, Monet Corso, says a Feb. 14 target date has been set for an album release, but that it won't come with any artistic compromise. First off, I want to express my gratitude to all of you devoted and beloved fans for your continuous support and patience! Well it's official...I just signed my publishing deal with Sony and I am going to release my first holiday song on AOL which comes out next week. 'Hey everyone! First of all, I want to thank you for all of the amazing comments and support over the past several months. I promise to keep the updates coming on a regular basis from this point on...so please check back because you never know what we're going to post at any given moment (maybe (maybe a sneak peek at some new music??????). I know that there are a bunch of questions about my record and when it's coming out - not to mention the rumors that are floating around out there. One thing I can tell you is that I've been writing and recording a bunch of songs for the record with some great people, and I can't wait to share the music with everyone. I've been in Los Angeles, Nashville and Richmond - heading to Atlanta next week to write and record as well. There are a lot of interesting opportunities for releasing my record...please do not worry because it's coming soon! Remember...just because we haven't announced a label yet does not mean that I am not working on and releasing my music. We are exploring all of the options and are very focused on a situation that would be the best of all worlds. Over the next couple weeks you will notice changes to the MySpace page, and I will be posting messages regularly (blogs, video, audio). I am in the studio now finishing up a song that we started this past week, and I just finished a song for the holidays...it's a cover of Donny Hathaway's version of "This Christmas." I can't wait for you guys to hear it and I will make sure that all of my "friends" get to sample it first. I look forward to seeing everyone on tour in '07!
